Navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme can be challenging, but understanding which funding categories apply to your situation is crucial to getting the support you need. Here’s a clear breakdown of the main categories participants can access.

Core Supports

Core supports help with everyday activities and achieving your goals day to day. This category covers assistance with personal care, household tasks and community involvement — generally the most flexible category, meaning funds can often move between different types of core support as circumstances change.

Capacity Building Supports

Capacity building supports are designed to improve independence, abilities and skills over time. This includes services that help build social and communication skills, as well as support to develop stronger financial management and life skills. Unlike core supports, funding here is generally tied to its specific purpose.

Capital Supports

Capital supports cover one-off expenditures or investments that enhance independence, such as assistive technology, home modifications and vehicle modifications. These typically require quotes and a clear connection to assessed need.

Assistance with Daily Living

This focuses specifically on everyday life activities like personal care and housework, helping participants maintain independence and quality of life at home.

Support Coordination

Support coordination helps participants connect with the right providers and navigate the NDIS system more broadly. Whether a participant is agency-managed, plan-managed or self-managed, a support coordinator’s role is to make sure funded supports actually translate into real, accessible services.

Making the Most of Your Categories

Understanding these categories is the foundation for getting genuine value from an NDIS plan. It’s worth reviewing how your funding is allocated against your actual goals periodically, rather than only at plan renewal, and raising questions with your planner, LAC or support coordinator whenever something isn’t clear.
