The National Disability Insurance Scheme, known as the NDIS, is a national program supporting Australians with disability, along with their families and carers. Introduced in 2013, it now supports hundreds of thousands of Australians with disability, including a significant number of children, to access the services and support they need to live fulfilling lives.

The Purpose of the NDIS

Funded by the Australian Government and administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), the NDIS is designed to provide funding and resources to people with disability, with the core aim of improving quality of life and enabling greater independence. Rather than a one-size-fits-all model, it provides individualised funding based on each person’s assessed needs and goals.

What the NDIS Covers

The NDIS funds a broad range of supports, including support coordination, plan management, Supported Independent Living, community participation, assistance with daily living, therapeutic supports, assistive technology, and Specialist Disability Accommodation.

How It Benefits Participants and Families

Through the NDIS, participants and their families can choose the types of support they need, when they need them, and who delivers them. This flexibility is central to the scheme’s design — it aims to give people with disability real choice and control over their own support, rather than a prescribed, generic package.

The NDIS provides financial support that covers the cost of disability-related services, including assistive technology, personal care support and specialist therapies. This significantly reduces the financial burden on people with disability and their families, allowing access to the services they need without the added stress of covering the full cost themselves.

Assistive technology refers to devices or equipment designed to help with specific tasks — wheelchairs, voice and speech recognition tools, and text-to-speech converters are common examples.

Personal care support covers day-to-day assistance, whether at home or elsewhere, and includes physical, mental and emotional support, not just practical tasks.

Specialist therapies are delivered by qualified health professionals to address specific health conditions or support needs.
