Family carers do an enormous amount of the day-to-day work behind a participant’s NDIS journey, often without much acknowledgement or support of their own. Looking after a family member with disability is meaningful, but it’s also genuinely demanding, and carers deserve real resources and support too.
Recognising Carer Burnout
It’s common for family carers to put their own needs last. Over time this can lead to exhaustion, stress and burnout, which ultimately affects the quality of care they’re able to provide. Recognising the early signs — persistent tiredness, irritability, or feeling constantly overwhelmed — is an important first step towards getting support before things become unmanageable.
Practical Ways to Get Support
Respite care gives carers a genuine break, whether that’s a few hours a week or a longer stay, while the participant continues to receive quality support elsewhere.
Carer support groups, in person or online, connect family carers with others who understand the specific challenges of the role — practical tips and emotional support both matter here.
Involving a support coordinator can take some of the administrative and coordination load off a family carer’s shoulders, freeing up time and mental energy for the relationship itself rather than the logistics around it.
Using funded supports fully means a participant’s NDIS plan is doing as much of the heavy lifting as it’s designed to, rather than a family carer quietly absorbing tasks that funded support could be covering.
Looking After Your Own Wellbeing
Carers often benefit from the same basics everyone does — regular movement, staying socially connected, and making time, even briefly, for things that aren’t caregiving-related. None of this is selfish; a well-supported carer is better placed to provide consistent, high-quality care over the long term.
How Enable Hub Supports Families
At Enable Hub, we see family carers as genuine partners in a participant’s care, not just a background presence. Our team works with families to understand what support actually looks like day to day, and we’re always happy to talk through how funded services can take pressure off.
